On 8 February 2023, we will mark the important anniversary of 30 years since the separation of the Czechoslovak currency. The CNB commemorates the monetary separation in its new "Breakup! Establishment of the Czech and Slovak Currencies in 1993" exhibition. Visit our exhibition for comprehensive information about the entire separation process and discover lesser-known but extremely important details about the split of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic. You will also learn about the key role of the State Bank of Czechoslovakia, the establishment of the Czech National Bank and the National Bank of Slovakia, and the preparation of new banknotes and coins, whose designs and final versions can also be seen at the exhibition.
The exhibition is divided into three thematic parts. The first will illustrate the circumstances of the dissolution of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic, the position of the then State Bank of Czechoslovakia and the establishment of the Czech and Slovak central banks in 1993. The second is devoted to the monetary situation after the establishment of the Czech Republic, in particular the reasons why the initial thoughts of preserving the Czechoslovak monetary union until the end of July 1993 were quickly overcome. After that, it will show the legislative, organisational and technical aspects of the split of the Czech and Slovak currencies. The third part of the exhibition describes the creation of the two countries' banknotes and coins, which replaced the existing federal or stamped issues as new legal tender.
The exhibition is located at the Visitor Centre in Prague. The exhibition will be open the whole anniversary year 2023, Tuesday to Friday from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
We look forward to your visit.
